MECCA, Australia and New Zealand’s leading independent beauty retailer, is renowned for its exceptional customer experiences, all guided by the philosophy of MECCA Magic. More than a way of working, it’s a way of being, a commitment to care, connection, and empowerment that shapes every interaction and supports every team member to thrive. 

Partnering with Transitioning Well, MECCA co-designed a leadership program that strengthened this culture, helping leaders feel confident, supported and capable in every situation. 

The Opportunity 

MECCA wanted to create a program that amplified the skills and strengths their leaders already bring. The goal was to empower team members, celebrate MECCA Magic, and support leaders in bringing their best to their teams through thoughtful, people-focused education. 

MECCA partnered with Transitioning Well to design a program grounded in psychological insight, leadership development and real-world retail experience. From the outset, the focus was on alignment ensuring the education reflected MECCA’s values, language and culture.

The Design 

The program was designed with leaders at the centre, recognising the important role they play in shaping team culture, confidence and psychological safety. Rather than focusing on isolated techniques, the education addressed leadership capability holistically supporting leaders to understand themselves, their teams and the environments they work in. 

The training was structured around five core capability areas: 

1. Leadership Awareness and Responsibility

Supporting leaders to create environments where people feel safe, supported and confident. 

2. Situational Awareness 

Building awareness of environmental and interpersonal dynamics. 

3. Managing Stress in the Moment

Equipping leaders with practical tools to regulate their own stress responses, supporting clearer thinking and leadership. 

4. Communication Skills

Supporting leaders to communicate with clarity and care and positioning MECCA Magic as a powerful leadership tool. 

5. Supporting Self and Others

Strengthening confidence in psychologically safe conversations that support connection.

The Pilot

The program launched as a pilot in one MECCA store, supported by EML through its Mutual Benefits Program. This support enabled MECCA to invest in high-quality, face-to-face education aligned with its values and commitment to its people. 

Leaders described the experience as engaging, practical and deeply human. The strongest feedback came from team members themselves. 

The feedback has been incredibly positive,” shares Claire Lyons, People & Culture Manager at MECCA. Team members feel supported and empowered. They recognise that the way MECCA shows up with customers is already a strength,  and now they have additional language and tools that reinforce that confidence. They’re sharing what they’ve learned with each other, and it’s bringing people together.” 

Following the success of the initial pilot, MECCA expanded the program across multiple stores. The organisation deliberately retained face-to-face delivery, recognising the value of presence, care and real-time responsiveness in creating psychological safety.

The Impact 

Stronger Leadership Confidence

The partnership continues to evolve, enabling ongoing iteration and growth of leadership capability across the organisation.
